River Rats, also known as the Fair Haven Sailing Club, is a volunteer run, educational non-profit organization dedicated to sailing. Our flagship youth sailing program has trained over 5,000 children and our adult training program allows for entire families to learn to sail together. We are an affordable, friendly and welcoming organization whose members are drawn together by a love of sailing, love of the water, and the joy that comes from "simply messing about in boats".
River Rats also offers members mooring space and berths for kayaks and paddle boards, and social events including fun sailing races and BBQ nights.
Our name was inspired by the story The River Bank in the children's book Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, where we hear a discussion about boats:
"Is it so nice as all that?" asked the Mole shyly.
"Nice? It's the only thing," said the Water Rat solemnly, as he leant forward for his stroke. "Believe me, my friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats."
Come join us on the beautiful Navesink River to see why!
