The Junior Sailing Program is given each summer, beginning shortly after the end of the school year. It consists of two four-week sessions on weekdays – children may enroll in either or both sessions. Students must be at least 9 years old by June 1st, no older than 16, and able to swim. A swim test is conducted at the start of classes.
Each session has Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced classes which meet 2 1/2 days per week. Beginner classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays 9 AM - 4 PM and Fridays 9 AM -12 Noon. Intermediate and Advanced classes meet Tuesdays and Thurdsays 9 AM - 4 PM and Fridays 1 PM to 4 PM. Intermediate and advanced students are encouraged to participate in Junior Sweeps Race Week in August.
Specific dates and fees for this year are given in the Junior Sailing Program (pdf) file listed below. The Junior Sailing Program is open to all -- children whose families are club members or non-members.
The Beginner class
For students with little or no sailing experience. Emphasizes water safety, basic boat handling, and maintenance. Students sail Optimists and National 10s (Turnabouts).
The Intermediate class
Builds on skills taught in the beginner class and teaches spinnaker handling, racing, and managing boats under a variety of conditions. Students also sail Optimists and National 10s (Turnabouts).
The Advanced class
For more experienced sailors interested in racing who can handle a Laser or 420. Emphasizes precision boat handling, racing skills, and tactics. Advanced students may sail their own boats.
